Dr. Freedman brings thirty years of clinical and teaching experience to understanding and transforming emotional pain and confusion. NYC Psychoanalyst Dr. Ellyn Freedman

Dr. Freedman received her MSW degree from New York University, certificate in psychoanalytic psychotherapy from Washington Square Institute four year program and Psy D from the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. She has served on the faculties of Medical University of South Carolina Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as Instructor and as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Miami Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences where she remains on the clinical faculty. She also is a member of the faculty at Southeast Florida Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychology and has been a member of its Board of Directors.

Her practice experience includes Interdisciplinary Team Leader in the Department of Community Psychiatry at St. Luke’s-Rooselvelt Hospital in New York City where she coordinated and supervised a wide array of clinical intervention to a diverse population including former cult involved youth , newly diagnosed HIV population and chronic and acutely mentally ill. In this position she served as Field Instructor for Columbia University and New York University School of Social Work. Dr. Freedman has been in private practice since 1991 and has treated a broad spectrum of patients within individual, couple and family modalites including issues pertaining to intimacy, infidelity, identity, sexual orientation, sexuality, sexual compulsions, trauma, parenting, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, body image and body dysmorphia.

Dr. Freedman has presented at national conferences and published articles on countertrasference and co-construction in couple therapy. She has an ongong interest in the relationship between trauma and body image disorders as well as the integration of intersubjectivity, systems, complexity and neuroscience with psychoanalysis. She is a strong proponent of movement away from diagnostic labeling and rigid treatment regimens.

She is a member of International Association for Relational Psychoanalysis, International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology, Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and the Association for Autonomous Psychoanalytic Institutes.
